Radhanath Swami on Spiritual Depth

During the monsoon rains, a puddle of water gets bigger and bigger and bigger. During the dry season, the puddle of water dries to nothing. It is very much affected by the rains. But the ocean, whether it is the dry season or the monsoon rains, it remains the same. What is the difference? The puddle has no depth. Therefore it is completely affected by the environment, by the circumstances. But the ocean has depth. On the surface, the ocean is affected by the monsoons, but deep down, it’s not affected at all. It neither grows bigger nor smaller.

So on the surface, we have to deal with the things of this world, but if we don’t have much spiritual depth, it can either elate us or devastate us, with anxiety, misery, and worry. But a person who finds the spiritual depth, who uncovers the truth within, deals with the things only on its surface but deep down he is not affected at all. Nothing can change him because he has spiritual depth.

  1. What comes to mind is the difference between knowledge and realization. Realization means acting on this level, and knowledge means that we should be acting on this level. Although it seems insurmountable to attain this state, through sincere prayer anything is possible.

Radhanath Swami also mentions how an unsuspecting fish swimming on the river surface is captured by the hawk of destiny but if it goes deep into the river and takes shelter there it cannot be affected!

This is a post with such depth!! The example of the puddle and the ocean is remarkable. We especially liked the last line, "But a person who finds the spiritual depth, who uncovers the truth within, deals with the things only on its surface but deep down he is not affected at all. Nothing can change him because he has spiritual depth." Thank you, Radhanath Swami, for giving us such a wonderful insight to spiritual depth.

  21. Very Nice analogy is given herein by Radhanath Swamiji.Yes our dealing with the things of this material world should be like top of the puddle which is formed by rain water and has no depth.Instead our spiritual practice should be as deep as sea.Otherwise entanglement in this world is guranteed.Thank you Swamiji.
