Radhanath Swami on Acquiring the Higher Taste

Those who are engaged in the loving devotional service of the Lord transcend the different modes of material nature. An ocean transcends the rivers flowing into it because it is so full, it doesn't care for them. Although it still sees them flowing in, it witnesses them, but doesn't care for them. Similarly those engaged in the devotional service of the Lord taste something so much greater that they don’t care for the lower modes of material nature. A hog eats stool and we eat nice palatable food and so we don’t care for stool anymore. But if we have never tasted palatable foods then we may think stool to be nice. Similarly once we taste something higher then we will not have taste for something lower, we will not care for them and we will neglect them.

The example of hog given here is very convincing. Just as we have no attarction for hog food which is stool due to having a much higher taste, a pure devotee is totally unaffected by the onsloughts of the 3 modes of nature.

  2. We need to experience a higher taste to get sufficient disgust for the lower taste which holds us with a very tight grip. Radhanath Swami's example of the hog is perfect because it goes straight in through our thick ego.

  8. Nice analogy. Just like river come in touching with ocean doesn't affect ocean, the material modes present in this material world doesn't affect a person having higher taste.

  12. Hog eats the stool and feels satisfied and happy similarly we out of illusion, think that material pleasure is ultimate happiness. But this analogy of " Feeling Stool Nice" clarifies that once you have tasted higher taste, there is no taste for lower. Thank you very much Maharaj.

  13. The analogy of Hog eating stool and thinking as nice food is very convincing to understand the importance of higher taste in devotional service.

  16. Higher taste is for high grade people. They never go for lower taste. of all the tastes the taste derived through devotional service is top most. Very nice explanation. All glories to HH Radhanatha Swami Maharaja.
